Description:
A surgery which totally bypasses
the stomach (a pouch is formed out of the ring of muscle at
the end of the esophagus/top of the stomach called the
"cardia") and bypasses the first segment of small bowel
where most vitamins are digested. This is the oldest
procedure still being done. Patients should consider the Adjustable lap band
which shows the same end results as the gastric bypass as
far as weight loss, but requires no structural changes to
the digestive tract.
